Las lesiones del miembro superior suponen un elevado coste sanitario y social. Cuando una persona sufre una lesión en la mano, presenta un periodo de incapacidad temporal personal y laboral. La funcionalidad de la mano posibilita el cuidado de sí mismo y la participación e interacción con el entorno, ya que combina capacidades motoras como coger y manipular objetos, funciones sensoriales, y capacidades cogni­tivas y perceptivas; además facilita la capacidad de expresión, la comunicación gestual y la expresión emocional.

La terapia de la mano es una herramienta multidisciplinar que reduce el tiempo de recuperación, facilitando la incorporación al trabajo y abaratando costes sanitarios y sociales. Constituye uno de los aspectos más importantes y complejos dentro del abordaje del miembro superior, y requiere una formación completa y específica, haciendo uso del método científico, apoyado en la evidencia actual y en la experiencia clínica.
